No conference would be what it is without the support of those speaking, and EARL is no exception. Our speakers come from around the world to present their ideas and approaches. They represent companies of all sizes and give their time to share their knowledge and experience with attendees.
Tim has used and taught R for more than 9 years. He joined ATASS Sports as a researcher in 2007 after completing his mathematics doctorate at Exeter University, which focused on the use of evolutionary algorithms to solve network problems. In 2011, Tim was appointed Innovation & Development Manager, a role spanning numerous areas including technical training, coding innovation, designing statistical workshops (for PhD students and other audiences) and managing the company's internship programme. He is actively involved in the Royal Statistical Society where he is Chair of the Young Statisticians Section (YSS), and also organises the Exeter RUG
In this interactive talk, Dr Tim Paulden will provide an entry-level introduction to football modelling, following in the footsteps of the introductory tennis modelling session at EARL 2014. In addition to walking through a simple mathematical model for predicting football results, and exploring different directions in which this model can be improved and extended, Tim will also discuss a successful outreach project with Exeter Mathematics School (a new specialist mathematics school in Exeter) in which a group of students develop R programming skills through a two-month football modelling activity.
